Just a quick update this week to say a big congrats to Chiang Mai FC who beat Sriracha FC an emphatic 4 – 0 in tonight’s home thriller. I went to the game to cheer on Chiang Mai (nicknamed The Tigers) and, although I missed the first three goals (which were in the first 25 minutes!) because of a silly tuktuk guy who took me everywhere else in town before he found the MASSIVE stadium, I had a great time.
Throughout the game, even during half time and after the final whistle, the fans were amazing. They were in an ecstatic mood and the sound of drums and chanting echoed incessantly around the stadium. The Tigers’ crowd had more reason to celebrate when their team bagged another corker of a goal near the end of the second half – thankfully I didn’t miss that one! It was also great to see the Chiang Mai fans show their appreciation when the opposing team did something well and they applauded them at the end of the match as well. So Thai football fans are definitely a better natured bunch than their counterparts in the UK!
I enjoyed myself that much this evening, I bought a Chiang Mai FC top (only 450 baht/£9) – so I’m now an official Tigers fan!
If you fancy going to a game, check the fixtures here and make sure your tuk-tuk guy actually knows where he is going! A return tuk-tuk trip from/to the Old Town will cost about 300 baht and tickets to the games range 80-120 baht, so it’s a cheapish and cheerful way to pass an evening.
I’m glad I got to see a game before we jet off to Phuket on Wednesday night for the next stage of our round the world journey – the Thai islands!
Here are a few shots from this evening’s big game…
